Veterinary Nurse Animal Clinic/Wildlife Project

Tzaneen Animal Clinic

Students studying veterinary nursing have an exciting opportunity to work in an animal clinic in Tzaneen which is in the Limpopo province of South Africa just one hour from Kruger Park.

The animal clinic is a well established Veterinary practice manned by two qualified Vets – Dr Pieter Cordier and Dr Hayley Render.  There are three hospital assistants (Kaleb, Reuben and Maria) and three receptionists who also make up the team.  The clinic is within walking distance of Tzaneen town centre.

The animal clinic deals on a daily basis with a variety of animals with 80% being companion animals such as dogs and cats and the remaining 20% being horse, exotics, livestock (goats, sheep, cattle).  The vets also deal with wildlife which students will experience and these can be anything from zebras and antelope to lions and leopard etc depending on the call out.

Vet nursing students will be given the opportunity to assist hands-on with all the daily routines either in the clinic or out in the bush which include:

* Clinical consultation and examination of the animals in practice and on call-outs such as:

  • Tick born diseases (Billiary, ehrlichiosis or tick bite fever)

  • Snakebites - Puff Adders, Mozambique Spitting Cobras, Egyptian Cobras, Mambas etc) We treat these with anti-venom like they do humans.

  • Skin allergies

  • Vaccinations

  • Age associated disease (arthritis, heart failure, kidney failure etc)

  • Gastro enteritis (and the ever present Parvo virus)

* Diagnostic evaluation of blood and other specimens which include radiology, bloodsmears for tropical diseases, blood collection, biopsies, laparotomies etc.

* Routine as well as more advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgery such as orthopedic repairs (bone pinning/wirings/plates and screws), excision of tumors, dentals, wound repair (bite wounds) and caesarians.

  • eye and ear surgery

  • enucleations (eye removals)

  • limb amputations

  • removal of foreign bodies (swallowed or penetration- eg porcupine coils)

  • bladder stone removals

* Assist in the theatre with anaesthetic and surgery of spaying and castrating animals.

* Daily therapy of in-hospital animals. Care and administration of medication to admitted patients, cleaning and treating wounds, application of bandages.

* Calving of cows.

In order to give volunteer students the maximum amount of hands-on experience there are only 2 students taken at the same time.

Minimum stay is one week – maximum is up to you!

Days Off:  Tzaneen is situated close to Kruger Park and many other private game reserves therefore there is ample opportunity for students to see the Big 5 and go on safaris on their days off.  There are many places to visit such as the Crocodile Farm, Graskop (God’s Window), the Tea Gardens and so on.

Working hours:
8am – 6pm Monday to Friday
8am – 12 noon Saturday

However, students must be prepared to go ‘on call’ with the vet out of these hours should the need arise.  The more you ‘muck in’, the more you will gain from the whole experience.

Accommodation

Students will be accommodated either in a local Guest House with en suite facilities and usually a swimming pool or similar accommodation but not in tents.

3 meals a day are provided (lunch will be packed).

Travel Arrangements

Students should fly into Johannesburg on the Sunday morning and get a connecting flight to Polokwane (Pietersburg) airport where they will be transferred to Tzaneen by car.  Students will be transferred back to Polokwane on the Sunday morning for a return flight out.  If students are transferring to the Game Capture or other projects we will discuss which domestic airport to return from.
