Veterinary Animal Clinic Project

Tzaneen Animal Clinic

Volunteers have an exciting opportunity to work in an animal clinic in Tzaneen which is in the Limpopo province of South Africa just one hour from Kruger Park.

The animal clinic is a well established Veterinary practice manned by two qualified Vets – Dr Pieter Cordier and Dr Hayley Render.  There are three hospital assistants (Kaleb, Reuben and Maria) and three receptionists who also make up the team.  The clinic is within walking distance of Tzaneen town centre.

The animal clinic deals on a daily basis with  a variety of animals with 80% being companion animals such as dogs and cats and the remaining 20% being horse, exotics, livestock (goats, sheep, cattle) and occasionally wildlife.

Volunteers will be giving the opportunity to assist hands-on on all the daily routines which include:

* Clinical consultation and examination of the animals in practice and on call-outs.

* Diagnostic evaluation of blood and other specimens.

* Routine as well as more advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.

* Assist in the theatre with anaesthetic and surgery of spaying and castrating animals.

* Daily therapy of in-hospital animals.

* Calving of cows.

In order to give volunteers the maximum amount of hands-on experience there are only 2 students taken at the same time.

Minimum stay is one week – maximum is up to you!

Days Off:  Tzaneen is situated close to Kruger Park and many other private game reserves therefore there is ample opportunity for volunteers to see the Big 5 and go on safaris on their days off.  There are many places to visit such as the Crocodile Farm, Graskop (God’s Window), the Tea Gardens and so on.

Working hours:
8am – 6pm Monday to Friday
8am – 12 noon Saturday

However, volunteers must be prepared to go ‘on call’ with the vet out of these hours should the need arise.
